Job Purpose:

Heart of Newhaven (the Heart) is a community hub, owned and managed by local people through a Board of Trustees with the over-arching aim of bringing people together, promoting inclusion and alleviating isolation and loneliness within the community. We know that building positive and sustainable relationships helps to mitigate the negative impacts of health inequalities, poverty, and social isolation

This new role (funded by the National Lottery Community Fund) will use a community development approach to recruit and support a team of volunteers who in turn will offer tailored support to individuals to help them access our activities and services. We want to find and implement creative ways of addressing the barriers that we know make it difficult for some people to access our community offer (costs, clear information, support to attend) and thereby encourage meaningful and sustainable participation.

Main tasks and responsibilities:

  1. Work with our Community Advisory group to determine gaps in current provision and identify potential target audiences

  2. Build positive and trusting relationships within the local community and with relevant organisations to increase their knowledge and understanding of the Heart’s resources

  3. Recruit, coordinate and, where appropriate, train volunteers to engage and support participants and enable programme delivery

  4. Publicise activities appropriately

  5. Develop and manage the delivery of activities

  6. Use a range of monitoring and evaluation tools to demonstrate the impact of the engagement programme

  7. Attend relevant internal and external meetings and work as part of the staff team

  8. Communicate effectively and document relevant information efficiently and timeously

  9. Comply with all relevant policies and procedures in carrying out your responsibilities

Person Specification:

Essential:

  1. Proven experience of using a community development approach

  2. Experience of working with volunteers

  3. Strong interpersonal skills to enable effective communication with a wide variety of stakeholders (including colleagues, volunteers, participants and representatives of external organisations)

  4. Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, including experience of presenting reports and information to a range of audiences

  5. Experience of developing and delivering an evaluation framework

  6. Good IT skills including the use of Microsoft Office

  7. Excellent time management skills with the ability to organise and prioritise own workload to meet deadlines

  8. Ability to work as a member of a team

Desirable:

  1. Experience of working in a grant-funded project to ensure that outcomes are consistent with the funder’s aims and objectives

  2. A relevant qualification

Personal Qualities:

  1. The ability to remain motivated and resilient and inspire these qualities in others

  2. The ability to understand and relate to different audiences and to recognise the importance of involving community members in planning and delivery
