About us

The Heart of Newhaven Community was constituted on 28th January 2019 with a Steering Group of 12 members.

We registered as a SCIO on 4th February 2020 and acquired the former Victoria Primary School from The City of Edinburgh Council by Community Asset Transfer in August 2022, with funding from Scottish Land Fund.

We are developing the former school, now known as “The Heart” as an intergenerational community hub. We have three themes, identified by community consultation:

  • Culture & Heritage

  • Learning & Enterprise

  • Community Well-Being

Our vision is that our intergenerational and collaborative practice encourages, develops and facilitates inclusive activities which increase tolerance, celebrate diversity and promote individual and community wellbeing. Embedding intergenerational practice at The Heart is a key ambition which will take time and support to achieve. The aspiration is to work in partnership to bring older and young people together through purposeful, mutually beneficial activities to promote greater understanding and respect between generations.

We want young people and older people to be better connected, less socially isolated and more actively engaged with their community, contributing towards active citizenship, increased independence, well-being and self-confidence.

  • DAVID LITTLEJOHN (Treasurer)

Over the course of my career I’ve worked in economic development and regeneration across the UK, mostly recently at Perth & Kinross Council. I live very near the Heart and this was one of the reasons I wanted to give back some of my time and experience to my community.

And also, I can easily see if all the lights have been switched off!!

  • JO HODGES

Jo is a retired senior civil servant with a PhD in physics and an MBA who moved to Newhaven in 2020.  Her Civil Service career was mainly spent in science policy, including working on climate change in the late 1990s, which she considers her best ever job.

Before retiring Lynne was Head of Planning and Performance in Edinburgh Council's Children and Families Department, arriving at that position via a career in community education and development roles spanning nearly 40 years in positions in both the statutory and voluntary sectors primarily in Scotland.
